You can stop, start, and restart your server easily through the Cloudways Platform. The following steps will demonstrate how to perform these actions.

Managing your server also involves understanding details such as data retention, billing nuances, and accessibility concerns for stopped servers.

For instance, stopping the server does not erase any data, and configurations remain intact even during downtime.

How to Stop, Start, and Restart a Server

First of all, log In to your Cloudways Platform with your credentials and navigate to the My Servers page by clicking the Flexible icon on the side bar menu as shown below.

Now, select your desired server as shown in the image below:

Note:

Before selecting the server, it is advisable to check the Traffic Monitor on the Cloudways platform for any ongoing activities to avoid potential disruptions.

Now, Click on the icon located on the extreme right of the server tab.

Stopping the Server

Keep in mind that stopping the server will make the hosted applications temporarily inaccessible, but your data remains fully intact.

Billing will continue during this period, as resources are still allocated.

Click on the Stop button to stop the server.

Starting the Server

If you encounter issues with a server that appears unresponsive, restarting it can often resolve the problem. Use the steps above to perform this action.

You will see a start option when your server is stopped. If your server is stopped it will show a red circle next to your server name. Click on the Start button to start the server.

Restarting the Server

Restarting your server is particularly useful for resolving high CPU usage, clearing stuck or dead processes, applying configuration changes, or addressing downtime and application errors.

It is recommended to restart periodically, especially if your server has been running for an extended period.

First, make sure that your server is active, and it should show a green circle next to your server name. Click the Restart button to restart the server.

If your server experiences high CPU usage or downtime, restarting can help reset processes and restore functionality.

After restarting, monitor the server to ensure stability.

Restarting will safely reboot all services and refresh the server environment, ensuring optimal performance.

Additionally, consider using the Traffic Monitor feature to review ongoing server activities before performing any actions to prevent disruptions.

For more detailed guidance, consult the Cloudways Help Center or explore the implications of stopping your server, including how it may reduce usage but not halt billing entirely. Restarting during off-peak hours can minimize user impact.

Regularly monitor server health metrics to identify potential issues early. If only a specific service is affected, consider restarting that service instead of the entire server.

Manage Your Server with Ease on Cloudways

Cloudways provides a wide range of server-level actions to help you manage your applications smoothly and efficiently.

From monitoring performance and scaling resources to configuring security settings and managing services, all essential controls are available in one place.

By understanding these server actions, you can maintain better performance, improve security, and handle your hosting environment with confidence—even without deep technical knowledge.
