Accidentally deleting a server or application, or losing access to it due to an infrastructure issue, can cause unexpected downtime for your websites.

In some situations, Cloudways allows you to recover a deleted application or restore a server from available backups, helping you bring your websites back online quickly.

This guide explains how to recover a deleted application or server on the Cloudways platform, when recovery is possible, and what steps may be required after restoration.

You will also learn how Cloudways backups work, how servers can be restored or recreated from a backup, and what configurations may need to be updated afterward.

For example, after restoring a server from a backup, some settings such as DNS records, email configuration, or platform add-ons may need to be reconfigured to ensure your websites function correctly again.

Whether you are trying to recover a deleted Cloudways application, restore a server backup, or recover website data after an outage, this article will guide you through the available recovery options and recommended steps.

Understanding Recovery Limitations

Before attempting to recover a deleted application or server, it is important to understand how recovery works on the Cloudways platform.

Cloudways relies on automated backups to restore lost data. A backup is a saved copy of your server and application files, database, and configurations taken at a specific time.

Recovery is only possible if a backup exists that contains the required data.

Recovery may be possible in the following situations

  • The application was deleted, but a backup exists from before the deletion.

  • The server experienced an infrastructure issue, and the server needs to be recreated from a backup.

  • Website files or database data were accidentally modified or removed.

Recovery may not be possible in the following situations

  • No backup was created before the application or server was deleted.

  • The backup retention period has already expired.

  • The server was permanently removed and no usable backups remain.

If you are unsure whether recovery is possible, you can contact Cloudways Support for assistance.

When to Use Server Recovery

Server recovery should be used when your server or applications become unavailable and restoring from a backup is the safest way to recover your website data.

You may need to perform a server recovery in situations such as:

  • Accidental server deletion – when a server was removed unintentionally.

  • Infrastructure or cloud provider failure – when the underlying cloud provider experiences issues affecting server availability.

  • Corrupted server environment – when system files or configurations are damaged and the server cannot function normally.

  • Server rebuild after a critical issue – when the server must be recreated to restore normal operations.

In these cases, restoring the server from a backup can help bring your websites back online using the most recent available data.

Before You Start

Before attempting to recover a server or application, keep the following important points in mind.

  • Backups are required for recovery
Recovery is only possible if a backup exists that contains the required data.

  • Server IP address may change
If a server is recreated during recovery, the new server may receive a different IP address.

  • Some configurations may need to be restored
Certain settings such as DNS records, SSL certificates, email services, and platform add-ons may need to be reconfigured after recovery.

Review these requirements before starting the recovery process.

Understanding Different Recovery Scenarios

When a website becomes unavailable, the recovery method depends on the actual cause of the issue. The terms server recovery, backup restoration, and server rebuild are sometimes used interchangeably, but they apply to different situations.

The table below explains when each approach should be used.

Scenario

When It Happens

Recommended Action

Recovering a Deleted Server

The server was accidentally deleted from the Cloudways Platform.

Contact Cloudways Support to check if backups are available so the server can be recreated and restored.

Restoring from Backup

The server is still running but application files, databases, or configurations were deleted, corrupted, or changed unintentionally.

Restore the server or application to a previous backup that contains the correct data.

Server Recovery or Rebuild After Failure

The server becomes unreachable due to infrastructure issues, upstream cloud provider outages, severe system corruption, or unrecoverable server problems.

A new server may be created and restored from the latest available backup to bring websites back online.

In simple terms:

  • Backup restoration is used when the server is still running but you need to recover lost or changed data.

  • Server recovery or rebuild is used when the server itself becomes unavailable or cannot function normally.

  • Deleted server recovery applies when the server was removed and needs to be recreated using backups.

If your server becomes unreachable due to a cloud provider or infrastructure issue, Cloudways Support may recommend rebuilding the server and restoring it from backup to restore service as quickly as possible.

Recovering a Deleted Application or Server on Cloudways

The recovery method depends on the Cloudways product you are using, because backup and infrastructure management work differently for each platform.

Cloudways currently offers two main environments:

Each environment has a different recovery process.

The following sections explain how recovery works for each platform.

Cloudways Flexible

Cloudways Flexible gives you full control over your server infrastructure. Your applications run on servers provided by cloud providers such as DigitalOcean, AWS, Google Cloud, Linode, or Vultr.

If an application or server is deleted in Cloudways Flexible, recovery may be possible using server backups.

Important:

  • Only users with a full account can use this feature.

  • Deleted servers or applications must have an available backup to be recovered.

  • Deleted staging applications can not be recovered.

  • When you recover an application, it doesn't check the minimum requirements, settings, and packages required to run on that particular server, so please ensure your application is fully compatible with the server.

  • When you recover a server and downscale it, the system does not check whether the applications on that particular server will remain compatible with the smaller server size, so please ensure your server is fully compatible.- After the fourteen-day (14) retention period expires, all data is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

  • Server termination due to non-payment of invoices will result in restricted access and potential permanent removal after 14 days.

  • Always maintain local backups of your website data to mitigate potential data loss.

  • Server termination due to non-payment of invoices will result in restricted access and potential permanent removal after 14 days.

Note:

  • DigitalOcean Servers (General Purpose & CPU-Optimized) created with the New Unified Experience cannot be recovered in the Classic interface, please use Unified Experience to experience seamless recovery of these servers.

  • Applications previously hosted on DigitalOcean's (General Purpose & CPU-Optimized) servers before deletion cannot be recovered in the Classic interface. Please switch to the Unified Experience for a seamless recovery process.

Recovering a Deleted Application

If an application was accidentally deleted, it may be possible to restore it if the server still exists and a backup was created before the deletion.

In this situation, you can restore the server to a previous backup that still contains the application.

Restoring the server backup will bring back the application along with its files and database as they existed at the time of the backup.

However, keep in mind that restoring a server backup will also restore all applications on that server to the selected backup time.

Application recovery means your application's web files and database are recovered from the last available backup.

Important:

The recovered application(s) should be treated as a new application. The new application has a new default Cloudways Application URL; therefore, domains and any associated DNS records must be updated to take the websites live. If you recover your application on a different server, you must update A records to point your domain to a new server.

  • Next, click Recover Application.

  • From the given list, choose your Application and click Recover Application.

  • You can recover your application on the same server, a different server, or a new server. In this demonstration, we select the server where it was hosted before.

  • Finally, click Continue.

  • The application recovery may take a few minutes, depending on the size. If you would like more information, please visit the FAQs section below.

Recovering a Deleted Server

If the server itself was deleted, direct recovery may not always be possible because the server infrastructure has been removed.

However, if Cloudways backups are still available, Cloudways Support may be able to assist in restoring the server data by recreating a server from the backup.

This process typically involves:

  1. Creating a new server environment

  2. Restoring the available backup data

  3. Reconfiguring necessary settings

After the server is restored, you may need to update certain configurations such as:

  • DNS records (Domain Name System settings that connect your domain to the server)

  • Email configurations used for website notifications or contact forms

  • SSL certificates for secure HTTPS connections

  • Platform add-ons such as email services or security tools

These steps ensure that your websites function normally after the recovery.

Note:

The recovered server and application(s) should be treated as new servers and applications. The new server will have a different IP address, and the applications will have a new default Cloudways Application URL, e.g., http://wordpress-544566-1745104.cloudwaysapps.com; therefore, domains and any associated DNS records must be updated to take the websites live.

  • Now on the Server's page, click Recover Server.

  • From the given list, choose your Server and click Recover Server.

  • Now, you can change your Server Specifications, such as infrastructure provider, server size, application web files & database size (in the case of AWS and GCP), and server location.

  • Finally, click Recover.

Important:

Please note that you can not select a server of a lower size. It has to be the same size or bigger. You can also not choose a new Database provider (If you are using MariaDB, you cannot switch to MySQL 8.4, and vice versa)

  • The server recovery time may vary depending on the size of the applications. If you would like more information, please visit the FAQs section below.

Cloudways Autonomous

Cloudways Autonomous is designed to automatically manage infrastructure and scaling for your applications.

In this environment, servers are managed by the platform, and applications run inside an optimized container-based infrastructure.

Because the infrastructure is managed automatically, the recovery process is slightly different from Cloudways Flexible.

Note:

Recovering a Deleted Application

If an application is deleted on Cloudways Autonomous, recovery is only possible if a backup exists from before the deletion.

To restore the application, you can deploy a new application and restore the available backup that contains the required data.

A backup contains the application’s files and database at the time it was created. Restoring a backup brings the application back to the same state it was in when the backup was taken.

If no backup exists prior to deletion, the application data cannot be recovered.

Important:

The recovered application(s) should be treated as a new application. The new application has a new default Cloudways Application URL; therefore, domains and any associated DNS records must be updated to take the websites live.

  • Next, click Recover Application.

  • From the given list, choose your Application and click Recover Application.

  • The application recovery may take a few minutes, depending on the size. You can go ahead and visit the FAQs section below to get more information.

Recovering Applications After Infrastructure Issues

In rare cases, an application may become unavailable due to an issue with the underlying cloud infrastructure. Infrastructure refers to the servers and systems provided by the cloud provider that run your websites.

When such issues occur, Cloudways Support may restore the application environment using the most recent available backup.

After recovery, you may need to verify that certain configurations are correctly set, such as:

  • Domain connections

  • SSL certificates for secure HTTPS connections

  • Email services used by your website

  • Third-party integrations or platform add-ons

These checks ensure that your website functions normally after the recovery.

Post-Recovery Checklist

After restoring a server or application, it is important to verify that your website and services are working correctly.

Use the checklist below to confirm that all required configurations are properly set.

Update DNS Records

If the server IP address changed during recovery, update your domain’s DNS records so the domain points to the new server IP.

DNS (Domain Name System) connects your domain name to the server that hosts your website.

Verify SSL Certificates

Check that your SSL certificate is installed and active so visitors can access your website securely using HTTPS.

Configure Email Services

If your website sends emails (such as contact form submissions or password reset emails), verify that your SMTP or transactional email service is correctly configured.

Check Cron Jobs

Cron jobs are scheduled tasks that run automatically on your server, such as backups, email tasks, or maintenance scripts. Ensure that these jobs are still configured correctly.

Verify Platform Add-ons

If you are using Cloudways add-ons such as Malware Scanner or other services, confirm that they are enabled and properly configured.

Test Website Functionality

Finally, test your website to ensure that:

  • pages load correctly

  • forms submit successfully

  • login functionality works

  • emails are being sent properly

Troubleshooting After Recovery

If your website does not work as expected after restoring a server or application, check the following common issues.

Website Not Loading

Ensure that your DNS records point to the correct server IP address. DNS changes may also take time to propagate across the internet.

Email Not Sending

Verify that your SMTP or transactional email service is configured correctly within your application.

SSL Security Warnings

If browsers show SSL warnings, reinstall or renew your SSL certificate to restore secure HTTPS connections.

DNS Propagation Delays

After updating DNS records, changes may take several hours to propagate globally. During this time, some visitors may still reach the previous server location.

What May Need to Be Reconfigured After Server Recovery

When a server or application is restored from a backup, some configurations may need to be updated again. This happens because certain settings are stored outside the backup or depend on the server’s network configuration.

Below are some common settings that may require verification or reconfiguration.

DNS Records

DNS (Domain Name System) connects your domain name (for example, example.com) to your server’s IP address.

If a server is recreated or replaced during recovery, the server IP address may change. In that case, you will need to update the DNS records with the new IP address so visitors can reach your website again.

Email Configuration

Many websites send emails for actions such as:

  • Contact form submissions

  • Password reset notifications

  • Order confirmations

These emails usually rely on an external email service or SMTP configuration.

After a server recovery, you should verify that the email configuration is still active and correctly connected to your application.

SSL Certificates

An SSL certificate enables secure HTTPS connections between visitors and your website.

After restoring a server or application, check that your SSL certificate is still active. If necessary, you may need to reinstall or renew the certificate.

Add-ons and Integrations

Cloudways provides optional services called add-ons, such as email delivery services, security tools, or monitoring services.

After recovering a server, verify that any required add-ons are still enabled and properly configured.

Best Practices to Prevent Data Loss

To reduce the risk of data loss and ensure faster recovery, it is recommended to follow these best practices.

Configure Regular Backups

Ensure that automated backups are enabled and scheduled at an appropriate frequency. Regular backups allow you to restore your applications if unexpected issues occur.

Create Manual Backups Before Major Changes

Before performing actions such as:

  • Deleting an application

  • Updating critical configurations

  • Migrating websites

create a manual backup. This provides an immediate restore point if needed.

Monitor Server Status

Regularly monitor your server health and application availability using the Monitoring tools available in the Cloudways Platform.

Monitoring helps identify issues early and allows faster response in case of infrastructure problems.

When to Contact Cloudways Support

If you are unable to recover a deleted application or server using the available backup options, Cloudways Support may be able to assist.

You should contact support if:

  • You believe backups exist but cannot restore them

  • Your server experienced an infrastructure failure

  • Your applications remain unavailable after restoration

  • You need assistance recreating a server from backup data

Cloudways Support can review your server status and guide you through the available recovery options.

FAQs

Can I recover an application to a different server if the original server is deleted?

Yes, you can choose to recover your application on a different available server or a new server.

Which backup is used to recover the application/server?

The recovery feature will always seek the latest backup to recover your server or application. Please note that your applications' previous restore points will not be available after application recovery.

Why am I getting the error “We restore servers with at least one Application. Please restore Application instead.”?

To recover a server, you need to have at least one backup of the mentioned server before it was deleted. Cloudways Platform automatically takes a backup of your whole server within 24 hours of creation, or you can take an on-demand backup.

Why am I getting the error “Unfortunately, there is no backup available for this Application.”?

It means the application you are trying to recover has no backup available; therefore, it can not be restored. Applications with at least one backup can be recovered.

My trial period has expired, and I just upgraded my account. Can I still recover my applications and servers?

Yes, you can recover your applications and servers within fourteen days (14) of deletion if they have at least one backup available. Please remember that once your server is recovered, you must update the corresponding DNS records and configure your SSL certificates.

Why am I getting an error message stating, “Server does not have enough space. Please select a different server to restore an application or create a new one?”

It indicates that your chosen server does not have enough storage space to recover your desired application. You can optimize your server disk space or scale up the existing server. Alternatively, you can recover your application to a different available server.

Why is my deleted application/server not on the recovery list?

The following are the reasons if you do not see your desired application or server to recover:

  • Your backup's fourteen-day (14) retention period might have expired; hence, the backups have been removed.

  • You have just deleted an application/server, and they are removed from your Cloudways Platform; however, the process is still in progress. In this case, we suggest waiting for a few minutes and trying again.

  • You are trying to recover a staging application. What causes website or server deletion on Cloudways? Websites and servers can be deleted for various reasons including:

  • Non-payment of invoices can lead to server termination. If an invoice remains unpaid, server access is restricted, and the server, along with associated backups, may be permanently removed 14 days after termination.

  • Payment issues such as transactions blocked by your bank may cause billing gaps leading to server termination. What options do I have if the 14-day recovery window has expired? Once the 14-day retention period has expired, recovery through Cloudways is no longer possible. Your only options at this stage are:

  • Create a new server and rebuild your website from scratch.

  • Use local backups, if you have them, to restore your data and functionality. What causes delays during the restoration process? If you experience delays during restoration, they could be caused by server load or the size of the application being recovered. The restoration process involves transferring files and databases from backups stored in the S3 bucket to the server, which can take time for larger applications. What best practices should I follow to avoid permanent data loss? To protect your website data on Cloudways:

  • Ensure invoices are paid on time to avoid server termination and data loss.

  • Always maintain local backups separate from Cloudways' automatic backups.

  • Act quickly if your website or server is terminated, as the 14-day retention window is critical for recovery.

  • Remember that deleted staging sites cannot be restored but can be recreated if the live website is available.

  • Unpaid invoices can lead to service interruptions, including stopped servers and restricted access to Cloudways services. To restore services, the unpaid invoice must be settled.

  • Servers remain active for 48 hours after an invoice becomes unpaid. During this time, you can clear the invoice to avoid service interruption.

  • Cloudways may temporarily re-enable your server for 24 hours to allow you to make the payment as a courtesy.

  • If your server was deleted due to unpaid invoices, Cloudways retains backups for 14 days. After this period, backups are permanently deleted. If you have a local backup, you can use it to restore your server or application.

  • Access to your staging website and other Cloudways services will be restored once the unpaid invoice is cleared.
