Understanding how the Cloudways payment system works helps you stay in control of your costs and avoid billing issues.

Cloudways uses a simple, flexible, and transparent pay-as-you-go billing model, meaning you only pay for the resources you use.

In this article, we’ll explain how Cloudways billing works, the different payment methods, how invoices are generated, what happens if payments are delayed, and how to manage your account balance easily.

With the new Cloudways billing interface going live on April 1, 2026, we’ve also included the latest updates to help you navigate the improved experience with ease.

Payment System of Cloudways

Managing your hosting costs is now more transparent and flexible with the updated Cloudways billing system.

Whether you're using Cloudways Flexible or the Cloudways Autonomous plan, we offer tailored billing models designed to match your specific needs — from consistent monthly usage to flexible hourly billing.

Cloudways Flexible

Transparent Monthly Billing on a Pay-as-You-Go Model

The Cloudways Flexible plan follows a Pay-as-You-Go billing model, giving you the freedom to pay only for the resources you actually use. This means you're not tied to fixed monthly charges — instead, you're billed based on your server usage, add-ons, and storage consumption.

With the new billing system, invoices are automatically generated on the 1st of each month, summarizing your usage for the previous month.

Here’s how payment works:

  • If you’ve funds available in your Cloudways account, the invoice will be paid using those funds.

  • If your balance doesn’t cover the full invoice, the remaining amount will be charged to your primary saved payment method (credit/debit card or PayPal with recurring payments).

  • You can now also add multiple payment methods, ensuring uninterrupted service even if one payment method fails. (Now, you can also pay your invoice using PayPal)

Understanding Pay-as-You-Go

Under this model, you’re charged based on your actual usage. This includes:

  • Running servers (regardless of traffic or activity)

  • Add-ons (like backups or email)

  • Allocated resources, even if the server is stopped

For customers using DigitalOcean, Linode, or Vultr:

Stopping your server does not pause billing, as the resources (like IPs and disk space) remain assigned to your account.

For AWS or GCE users:

Stopped servers incur minimal charges — mostly for persistent storage (e.g., disk volumes).

Need a break from billing?

  • You can temporarily stop your servers, but billing will still apply for reserved resources.

  • If you wish to fully stop charges, consider canceling your Cloudways account after removing all active servers and services.

Cloudways Autonomous

Cloudways Autonomous offers a transparent, flexible pricing structure with hourly billing. You only pay for the actual time your app is active, without long-term commitments. This model includes costs for plan duration, autoscaling, and any overages like disk space and bandwidth usage.

Key Details:

  1. Hourly Pricing: You are billed for the exact time your app is active, whether on the Growth, Scale, or Plus plan. For example, if you use a Growth plan for only 10 days, you’ll only pay for those 10 days.

  2. Autoscaling Charges: Charges for autoscaling are calculated based on the number of active containers in use, depending on your selected plan.

  3. Plan Overages: Additional charges apply if you exceed your plan’s disk space or bandwidth limits. Disk space is billed hourly (pro-rata), while bandwidth is billed monthly.

  4. Examples Provided: Clear examples show how autoscaling and overages are billed, ensuring transparency for users.

This pricing model ensures you only pay for what you use, with full control over costs. Cloudways Autonomous provides peace of mind with no surprises and cost-efficiency at every step.

Supported Payment Methods

The following payment methods are supported at Cloudways:

  • Credit card or Debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express — you can add multiple credit cards at a time)

  • PayPal - now supports recurring payments (Available to customers who have upgraded the account)

Please note that PayPal payments are not automated; thus, you need to manually pay your invoices using PayPal.

Real-time Billing Feature

Cloudways offers a Real-time Billing feature that estimates your current usage levels for the ongoing month.

While it provides a close approximation of your billing amount, please note that it may not be 100% accurate and serves as an estimation tool rather than a precise calculation.

This feature helps you anticipate expenses and manage your budget effectively.

Authorization Charge on Credit Card

When you upgrade your Cloudways account, our payment processor, Adyen, charges a $1 authorization fee to verify your credit card.

Please note that this transaction will be canceled and reverted upon completion of the verification process.

The same procedure is applied when you update your credit card information, and the transaction is reverted once the payment processor verifies the new credit card.

What Happens if the Invoice Remains Unpaid?

  1. Invoice Generation and Initial Charge Attempt
Cloudways generates invoices on the 1st of each month for the previous month’s usage. As soon as invoices are issued, we attempt to charge the primary payment method on file.

    • If the primary card fails, the system will automatically attempt to charge any other added credit cards (Or PayPal).

    • If all cards fail, a notification will be sent to the account owner via email to rectify the issue.

  2. Account Access Restriction — Day 7
On day 7th, we will restrict access to your Cloudways account but all your servers and web applications will be running. You will be informed that your servers and applications may get stopped if the invoice remains unsettled in the next 48 hours

  3. Application and Server Suspension — Day 10
On day 10th, your applications and servers will be stopped.

  4. Final Reminder — Day 13
On day 13th, your applications and servers will be deleted. You will receive a final reminder notifying you that your server backups may be permanently deleted. If the invoice remains unpaid, your applications and servers will be deleted.

  5. Permanent Data Deletion — Day 28

On day 28th, if payment is still not received, your server backups and associated data will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

Note:

Want to use a different payment method?

– You can update your billing information to pay with a different credit card.

– You can also pay your invoice via PayPal.

– Additionally, you can add funds to pay your current invoice or prepay for future invoices.

Charges After the Account Cancellation

Cloudways bills in arrears, meaning you're charged for services used in the previous month.

If you cancel your account, you’ll still receive a final invoice for any usage before the cancellation date.

For example, if you cancel your plan on January 5th, you’ll get a final invoice in early February for the services used during those five days.

Once the invoice is paid, your account will be fully closed.

FAQs

1. What payment methods does Cloudways accept?

You can pay via major credit or debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, AmEx). In many cases, PayPal is also supported for invoice payments after your trial is upgraded.

2. How are invoices generated and when will I be billed?

Cloudways uses a pay-as-you-go model for Flexible and bills in arrears. Invoices are generated monthly (between 1st and 6th) for the usage in the prior month.

3. What happens if a payment fails or I miss an invoice?

If payment fails or invoice goes unpaid, Cloudways sends reminders (email). After 3 days, servers may be stopped; after 5 days, data could be deleted.

4. Can I add funds or preload credits to avoid failed payments?

Yes — you can add funds (via card or PayPal) to your Cloudways wallet. Future invoices draw from the available funds first before charging your card.

5. What is Real-Time Billing and how accurate is it?

Real-Time Billing shows an estimate of your upcoming invoice based on current usage. It gives you a preview but is not precise — actual billing may differ.

6. If I cancel or delete services mid-month, will I still get charged?

Yes. You still incur charges for the days you used services before cancellation. After cancellation, you’ll receive a final invoice (in arrears) for those days.
